Laser spectroscopy is an invaluable tool for studying the interactions of light and matter, with applications ranging from photodynamic cancer therapy to next generation solar cells. Previously, however, it was exclusively the domain of physics groups with extensive knowledge of laser optics as the equipment required was bulky, expensive, and difficult to maintain.

Over the past 10 years there have been huge advances in the efficiency, reliability, and applicability of fiber and solid-state laser systems, opening these tools up to researchers in diverse scientific fields. While the benefit of this is clear, the vast array of equipment and techniques available today can pose a challenge for researchers who want to start using laser spectroscopy as an everyday tool but are new to the field. There is a growing need, therefore, to educate the scientific community on which methods are available today, how to choose the proper equipment, and how to configure it optimally for the research studies of interest.
